About the artist:
Dadang Christanto was born in 1957 into an Indonesian family of Chinese descent in Tegal, a small village in Central Java, Indonesia. He studied painting in Yogyakarta where he was an active member of the arts community and his practice involves many artforms including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and performance.
A constant visitor to Australia during the 1990s, he settled in Darwin during 1999 and has recently moved to Brisbane.
About the work:
By exploring the themes of violence and power — and infusing them with empathy and truth, Dadang Christanto’s work is a call for an understanding and non-violent society. Through his work Christanto has looked for answers to his own personal family history and the unspoken history of Indonesia.
Dadang Christanto’s undiminished ability to empathise with others and his wish to reclaim a place for the oppressed continue to fuel his work and assist with the healing process for victims of violence.
