Hamna Mustafa

About the artist:

Humna Mustafa first began to explore the application of henna on textiles in 1999, as part of her Bachelor’s Degree in Print Design at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, in Karachi, Pakistan. She continued this exploration by establishing her own design label Diya Studio (Lamp Studio) in Karachi in 2000.

In 2004 she moved to Adelaide, introducing her henna works to an Australian audience.

About the work:

Journey of patterns is a new installation created specifically by Humna Mustafa for this exhibition. It comprises of three suspended silk panels, which are dyed in deepening shades of golden yellow and embellished with intricate henna patterns.

Henna is a primary symbol of the feminine in South Asian culture that has been used over the ages as a medium for body art, with designs and patterns that vary according to their ceremonial purpose.
