Savanhdary Vongpoothorn

About the artist:

Born in Laos, Vongpoothorn came to Australia with her parents in 1979 when she was 8 years old. Until she returned to Laos in 1996, her childhood memories of Laos had been like a dream.

She completed a bachelor of Visual Arts, University of Western Sydney and Masters of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales. Her work has been included in several important exhibitions of Australian art.

About the work:

Vongpoothorn is fascinated with the nature of repetition. This is most apparent in the artist’s trademark piercing of her canvas, which can be seen as a metaphor for the meticulous process of hand sewing, or as a reflection of the repetitive elements in meditation (breathing, chanting).
